Victoria Burials & Memorials

This collection of burials and memorials includes records from over 170 cemeteries. All come from Victoria except for six cemeteries, which come from the following states:

• New South Wales – Barham Cemetery (1901-1987), Castlereagh Cemetery (1828-1944), and Chinderah Cemetery (1875-1960)

• Northern Territory – Darwin Cemetery (1917-1970)

• Queensland – Coomera Cemetery (1867-1994) and Pimpama Cemetery (1878-1994)

Only the records from Old Melbourne Cemetery will provide you with both a transcript and an image of the original register. All other records come from the Genealogical Society of Victoria and will only provide a transcript of pertinent details:

Old Melbourne Cemetery

The transcripts from Old Melbourne Cemetery are generally more detailed, including the following additional fields:

• Age

• Birth year

• Birth place

• Occupation

• Residence

• Permission to bury date

• To whom permission to bury was granted

• Burial year

• Funeral date

• Burial place

• Minister – sometimes includes a name, other times just ‘yes’ or ‘no’

The images for Old Melbourne Cemetery may offer additional insight into your ancestor, such as your ancestor’s religious denomination or the name of next of kin.

While the burials began in 1837 at the Old Melbourne Cemetery, no burial records exist prior to 1866 due to a fire that occurred in the gatekeeper’s lodge in 1865. The cemetery plots were grouped by denomination. By 1851, the cemetery ceased burials except for those with prior claims on plots. The last burial occurred in 1917, and the cemetery closed in 1922.

With the expanding and encroaching Queen Victoria Market, more and more of the cemetery land was appropriated for use by the market. In 1920, exhumations began and bodies were reinterred in cemeteries around Melbourne.

The original burial registers are held at Public Record Office Victoria. The registers are arranged alphabetically by last name.
