The arrival of Anglicanism in Jamaica dates back to the period between 1654 and 1660, during the Anglo-Spanish war, following the island’s capture by English forces under Robert Venables and William Penn. Colonel Edward D’Oyley, the first British governor of Jamaica, promoted Christianity and Protestantism. The diocese of Jamaica was created in 1824, prior to which the church was under the authority of the Bishop of London. Jamaica was under British colonial rule from 1655 to 1962, becoming a colony in 1707. Today, Jamaica remains part of the British Commonwealth.
