Leicestershire Electoral Registers 1836-1970 Browse

The Leicestershire Electoral Registers 1836-1970 Browse allows you to browse through thousands of electoral registers. You can search by year, season, or place, or by all three fields at once. Every year electoral registers are created to maintain a list of eligible voters. If your ancestor was eligible to vote, he or she can be found in the registers. Most electoral registers recorded the following details:

• Name

• Residence

• Qualification – the type of property owned or leased

• Address

Voting was closely linked to ownership of property until 1918 when all men over the age of 21 and women over the age of 30 were given the right to vote. For this reason, registers before 1918 will include an explanation of how the person qualifies to vote.

The registers are organised by ward, and then within each ward, the lists are organised by road or street name in alphabetical order.

You can use the arrows on either side of the image to move through the register page by page to find your street or use the image counter at the bottom by typing in a page number to jump to within the document.

The images are provided by the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland.
