The Queensland, Immigrants Nominated for Passage 1884-1907 index was compiled from different registers, papers and correspondence created by the assistant immigration agent for the town of Maryborough in Queensland, Australia. Assistant immigration agents were responsible for providing information and services to immigrants in the area, for example relating to accommodation and rations at immigration depots. Importantly, they helped arrange employment opportunities for immigrants. Assistant immigration agents also publicised the arrival of ships in the local press, and processed ships’ passenger lists and other records as well as statistical information for the government.
The Queensland, Immigrants Nominated for Passage 1884-1907 index consists of two main types of records created by the assistant immigration agent in Maryborough, Queensland. Firstly, between 1884 and 1896, the assistant immigration agent kept the Register of Prospective Immigrants Nominated for a Passage. This register, called the Immigration Book, recorded prospective immigrants who had been nominated for passage. While details vary, these records usually include the date, the immigrant’s address or country of origin, the name and address of the nominator who was helping on their journey, the amount of passage, the action taken on the application, the date and the receipt number.
The following decade, the assistant immigration agent in Maryborough also gathered various correspondence and papers relating to nominated immigrants from Europe between 1904 and 1907. Some examples of this include memos, letters, passage remittance certificate forms, and various papers.
When searching the index, remember to check all possible spelling variations, as the handwriting was particularly difficult to read on the original registers and spelling was often inconsistent. Also keep in mind that all first names are abbreviated as they appeared in the original records.
